چکیده

We wish to provide quality of service (QoS) to scientists who are remotely controlling experiments on singular instruments such as the LBL Advanced Light Source (ALS) or who need to harness heterogeneous and distributed computing resources to perform large-scale computation. To ensure the timely availability of the computing, storage, and networking resources required for data collection and/or analysis, use of these resources must be scheduled in advance. The bandwidth reservation system (BRS) reserves time in IP differentiated service classes [1]. These classes have upper bounds on the total bandwidth allocation. The reservation unit is a slot a well-defined period of time with an associated bandwidth. The sum of the allocated bandwidths in all of the slot allocations never exceeds the maximum bandwidth defined for the service class. The result is that the classes are never oversubscribed.

Adaptive Quality of Service Management

The quality of services management in distributed application needs a lot of messages and complex reservation protocols at every communication unit. The proposed distributed and hierarchical architecture for different services offers more extensibility and efficiency to the application. But this architecture is part of the middleware and is transparent for the user level. Most of the systems us...

QoS-Aware Resource Management for Distributed Multimedia Applications

The ability of operating system and network infrastructure to provide end-to-end quality of service (QoS) guarantees in multimedia is a major acceptance factor for various distributed multimedia applications due to the temporal audiovisual and sensory information in these applications. Our constraints on the end-to-end guarantees are (1) QoS should be achieved on a general-purpose platform with...

Composing and Deploying Grid Middleware Web Services Using Model Driven Architecture

Rapid advances in networking, hardware, and middleware technologies are facilitating the development and deployment of complex grid applications, such as large-scale distributed collaborative scientific simulation, analysis of experiments in elementary particle physics, distributed mission training and virtual surgery for medical instruction. These predominantly collaborative applications are c...

Design of the STARS Network QoS Reservation System*

We are developing a trusted advance reservation system for network bandwidth. By “trusted” we mean that the system will be fraud-resistant: it will authenticate and check the authorization of each service requestor, and will prevent man-in-the-middle attacks by digitally signing all information exchanged over open networks. The system will allow service requestors to reserve network bandwidth i...

QoS as Middleware: Bandwidth Brokering System Design*

Our system provides the mechanisms for applications to make and use advance reservations for bandwidth. These mechanisms are built on top of the existing work in IP differentiated services. (The description in this paper is given in terms of IP differentiated service classes, but the intent is that it could also be applied to, e.g., a dynamic ATM circuit set up mechanism where QoS can be specif...
